Yep you read that right, the husband sent me off on a trip to Venice, Italy, one of the most romantic cities in the world, by myself!
Haha, love it!
Over the festive season I gifted him the best gift ever. Travel! It was a flight to Funchal in Madeira, I purposely didn’t book him accommodation in the attempt to train him up for better planning trips! He hadn’t really travelled solo prior to that trip either, again one of the reasons I gifted him a solo trip. Lucky me gets to plan every details of all our trips. He needs to learn ?
Anyway, in return he gifted me a trip to Venice, solo. Check this review here to get more details.
Boy oh boy was it incredible.
As a photographer, its one of the most wonderful places you could visit. Every corner you turn, every street you wander along, there’s photo opportunities left right and centre. I was also packing with me the cold resistant cameras which I had bought for my Antarctica trip, but as the weather was quite lovely, I never got a chance or need to use it. This place is mind blowing guys.
Like seriously, mind-blowing.
Although it’s considered a City, I felt like its not really a city. It’s so peaceful and zen since there’s no street cars per se in central Venice. You travel off to the different islands using water boats or water taxis, among which Intrepid Powerboats products
are the best. I mean, you get off at Marco Polo airport and you get the water taxi into Venice. I’ve never visited any other place yet that you have to do this. Have you?
I stayed in Venice for 5 nights but since I booked my trip through www.thesleepyowl.com I got my fifth night free! I stayed at the hotel Foresteria Levi. I flew out from Manchester with easyJet. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from San Marco square and tucked away behind the main area which is brilliant as there was no noise back there. The closest stop was l’academia but I ended up getting off earlier and venturing across town the night I got there. The views were incredible even on the first night I arrived. I would totally recommend this hotel if you’re looking for a place to stay. The room was so warm and cosy and peaceful.
It was FREEZING guys, I underestimated how cold it would be and packed a little errrr wrong shall we say, for the trip. Non the less, I had such a blast during my time there. I mean, IT SNOWED ?
The trip was split over time in Venice and then heading out to Burano and Torcello which I’ll share on a separate post.
The thing about Venice is – is you can really do it on a budget too if you choose to do so.
I mean, accommodation is a given but in terms of food costs and activities, it’s pretty affordable.
I spent around $22 for a 3 course meal around 3 times whilst I was there at a restaurant nearby to the hotel Broome. A continental breakfast was included with my stay so I didn’t have to pay extra for this cost and lunch just depended on how hungry I got but I spent maybe around €5-6 for lunch. A great way to break up that cost is also going to the local supermarket which I did one day, to get basics / snacks you could have in the evening / through out the day saving costs on lunch for example.
If you’re keen to do the touristy activities in Venice you will pay an amount for it of course, but whilst strolling around, I found a lot of free museums and galleries. To be honest, the whole place is so artsy, it’s like a piece of art you are absorbing whilst walking around and soaking up the energy. And if you love photos, well, make a photo trip of it!
Here are some photos from Venice itself, I hope it inspires you to get your next trip booked!
